REID, MIRIAM (Nee Canning)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great-Great Grandmother, Sister and Aunt - Miriam Reid (nee: Canning) at the John M Gray in St. Anthony NL at the age of 95 years. She leaves to mourn, her Daughters, Marilyn (Late Wesley Keefe), Margaret (Late Harvey Randell), Priscilla (Naaman), Jane, (Woodly), Joan (Winston) and special Sons; Wade (Maisie), Graham (Ruby), Booth (Olive), Sherlock (Nina), Morris (Carmel) and David (Gladys); Brothers, Eric (Gladys), Obediah (Hilda); Sisters, Emma, Fern (David) Joan (Hayward) and Sister In Law Nina as well as friends and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and other family and friends.

She is predeceased by her parents (Obediah and Leah), Husband (Booth), Son (Raymond), Brother (Hayward), Sister (Isabelle), Son-In-Laws (Rifford Cassell, Harvey Randell and Wesley Keefe)

HEDDERSON, CARMEN MARIE (NEE EDDY)

August 1, 1954 - December 28, 2021

Marie was born to Rita and Walter J. Eddy on August 1, 1954 in Pleasent Harbour, NS. She had 5 brothers, Barry, Billy, Raymond, Wayne, and Arnold as well as 2 Sisters, Shirley and Lois. Marie devoted her life to her work and family. She worked at the Chocolate factory for 38 years until they shut down. Marie met the love of her life, Dwane Hedderson from Quirpon and was married on September 17, 2005 in Nova Scotia. A few years later they moved back to Quirpon where she continued to work. Marie loved walking the beaches looking for sea glass. He goal was to set up her own shop when she retired but cancer didn’t allow that to happen. Marie lost her battle with cancer on December 28, 2021 at the Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony with her family at her side at the age of 67 years.

She will be greatly missed by her husband Dwane; Daughter, Crystal; Grandhcildren, Rebecca, Emily, Lance, Lucas, and Gwen; Stephchildren, Maurice and Monia; Mother-in-law, Florence Hedderson; Brothers in law Don (Dorothy) , Tom (Ann), Edward (Lona), Rick (Leona) ; Sisters in Law Jessie (Maurice), Wanda (Bob), Sherry (Edward); Siblings, Barry, Billy, Raymond, Shirley, Lois, as well as a large circle of family and friends.

She is predeceased by her parents, Rita (Pye) and Walter J. Eddy; Brothers, Wayne and Arnold and Brother-in-law, Kenny.

MITCHELMORE, ALMA (NEE GOULD)

December 14, 1934 - December 22, 2021

Passed away peacefully on December 22, 2021 at The Agnes Pratt Home in St. John’s, NL at the age of eighty-seven (87).

Alma was born in Bear Cove, NL on December 14, 1934, the daughter of Stephen and Effie Gould. She raised her family in Green Island Cove, NL. She was a religious person, a proud family woman, a great homemaker, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was kind and affectionate to everyone.

Alma will always be remembered by her daughter Yvonne (Frank); sons Bob (Fern), Garfield (Pam), Rick, Albert (Cathy); grandchildren: Louise, Christa, and David (Yvonne); Paul, Adam, and Kelly (Bob); Brad (Garfield); Ryan, Kyle, and Lucas (Albert); great-grandchildren Haley (Louise), Blake and Callie (Christa), Emma (David), Eve (Paul), Molly and Mary (Adam); sisters Bridgette Gould (late Isaac), Marie Mitchelmore (George), Mary Dredge (late Curtis), Jane Genge (Abraham); brothers Clyde Gould (Ethel), Austin Gould (Ivy).

Alma is predeceased by her husband Garfield, her son David, parents Stephen and Effie Gould, sisters Gloria Gould, Georgina Genge (late Daniel), Ivy Gould (Cyril).

A special thank-you goes out to the wonderful staff and security at The Agnes Pratt Home. Their compassionate care and consideration were greatly appreciated and will not be forgotten.

BRENTON, EILEEN JESSIE

April 4, 1938 - December 24, 2021

Eileen Jessie Cassell was born on April 4, 1938 to Laura and Theophilus Cassell. Also born in this family were four brothers: Pleman (deceased) Frederick, Edmund, Lesley and three sisters: Elizabeth, Joyce and Elva (deceased).Eileen married Job Brenton on November 5, 1952. Together they raised 11 children. Eileen was a stay at home mother until most of her children were grown. Then she worked at the Fish Plant for approximately twenty years. She was a Christian for most of her life, devoted to serving the Lord for at least 60 years. She attended the Apostolic Faith Church at Hooping Harbor and when they relocated to Bide Arm in 1969 she faithfully attended the church there. She was a very soft spoken person and always had a friendly smile. She was not a public or brave person but during one of the last services she attended she rose to her feet and shared her humble testimony.

In September, 2020, she had a fall at her home. Following this, her health slowly declined. On December 24, 2021, she passed peacefully away at the Curtis Memorial Hospital, St. Anthony. She was 83 years of age. She was predeceased by her husband, Job, parents, Theophilus and Laura Cassell, daughter, Clara, son-in-law, Tom Hempshall, brother, Pleman, sister, Elva, brother-in-law, Harold, brother in law, Guy Brown, grandsons, Tyson and JJ, and granddaughter, Amber.

She will be sadly missed and remembered by her children Melvin (Christine), Hilda (Delford), Willis (Brenda), Minnie (Michael), Alvin (Marlene), Bruce (Jackie), Larry (Rhonda), Sheila (Darrell), Sherry and Douglas. She also leaves to mourn: son-in-law Gordon Tucker, sister-in-law Shirley and husband Naaman Randell, three brothers: Fred (Bessie) Cassell, Edmund (Evelyn) Cassell, Lesley (Ivy) Cassell, two sisters: Elizabeth (Freeman Compton), and Joyce Brown, 18 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild plus a large number of relatives and friends.

The funeral will take place at the Bide Arm Apostolic Faith Church on Tuesday, December 28th, 2021 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Christopher Hewlett officiating. Interment to follow.

RANDELL, MATTHEW

February 10, 1956 – December 21, 2021

It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Mathew Randell on December 21, 2021. Matt was born on February 10, 1956. He is predeceased by his father Samuel Randell, his mother Amy Randell, and sister Ruby Dredge of Black Duck Cove. He leaves behind his brother Leslie Randell of Roddickton, his brother in law Jacob Dredge, his nephews Tyson Dredge (Josephine) and Trevor Dredge, his great nephew Reed and numerous cousins.

After finishing high school, Matt did a carpentry course at trade school, subsequently travelling to Alberta for work. After a short duration of working in Alberta, Matt returned home, later moving to Ontario where he worked as a cabinet builder. Upon his return from Ontario, Matt commenced work with a survey crew, working on the highways. This job led to Matt’s permanent employment of 24 years with the Department of Highways. He spent most of those years working out of the Plum Point and Flower’s Cove depots. During his time in the Straits, Matt lived with his sister Ruby, brother in law Jacob and their family.

One of Matthew’s loves was working in his workshop, creating a variety of wood crafted items. He was always ready to lend a hand to those who required help or wanted items made. Matt loved all types of tools, in fact his workshop is overfilled with tools that were never opened. Matt was a very quiet and unassuming man, often seen on a warm summer’s day, sitting on the bench by his workshop and looking out at the neighborhood activities.

Shortly after his retirement, in 2020, Mathew was diagnosed with Cancer and succumbed to the disease. Matt will be missed by his family, friends, and coworkers.

TUCKER, DORA

October 12, 1947 - December 21, 2021

Dora was born in Ship Cove on October 12th 1947 to Myrtle & Norman Taylor. She passed peacefully on the evening of December 21, 2021. She was a loving wife to Hayward Tucker, having five children in total for him, one boy & four girls. She loved all her grandchildren, but raised two of eight grandchildren as her own, Anthony who is pre deceased & Derrick, who also made her a great-grandmother to two great grandbabies: Sophia & Benson.

She was a hard working FPI worker all her life until the plant closed for the moratorium in 1992. She always was in good spirits & loved children, it did not matter if it was her own or a total stranger. She moved to Labrador after the death of her husband & found her partner Edward who treated her like the queen she was & loved her family as if they were his own. She lived a fun and fulfilling life until the very end.

She leaves behind her five children, seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one sister, two brothers & is now in her forever resting place along with those deceased before her.
The family would like to thank the John. M. Grey Center in St. Anthony for providing our loved one with the care & support she needed in her last endeavours.

HEDDERSON, ALICE MAE

January 2, 1948 - December 16, 2021

Alice Mae Hedderson (Nee Pilgrim) was born in Fox Harbour(St. Lewis), Labrador. To Wesley and and Clara Pilgrim on January 2nd, 1948. On November 30th, 1966 she married the love of her life, Harrison. Together they raised 5 girls, Maxine, Cindy, Nicole, Lorie and Melanie, as well as oldest Grandson, Jonathan. She was blessed with 4 grandchildren; Jonathan, Blake, Claire and Joshua. Alice was a woman well known for her smile, contagious laughter and kindness, who had always put others first, and was always there to lend a helping hand. Alice loved to do her word search, while enjoying her Tetley Tea and watching Coronation Street. She also enjoyed cooking for her family, and making her signature homemade bread to share with all.

Alice leaves to mourn her Husband, Harrison Hedderson; Daughters, Maxine (Wally), Cindy, Nicole, Lorie (David), Melanie (Jim); Sisters, Betty Pilgrim, Millie Gillingham; Brothers, Eric, Albert, Murdock, Leonard, Fred; Grandchildren, Jonathan, Blake, Claire, and Joshua. Alice will also be greatly missed by a large circle of other relatives, close friends. Alice was pre-deceased by her parents, Wesley & Clara Pilgrim; Brothers, Sam, Aubrey ; and Sisters, Evelyn, Blanche, and Lavenia.

BURT, MARY JANE

June 26, 1924 - December 15, 2021

Mary Jane (Strangemore) Burt was born in Ireland Bight, on June 26, 1924, one of the eight children born to Esau and Dorcas (Powell) Strangemore. She was raised in Ireland Bight, moving to St. Anthony in 1948. Here she met her life companion William (Bill) Burt. They were married on January 16, 1952 .The two of them began their life career with the International Grenfell Association and Grenfell Regional Health Services. Mary Jane and Bill were an inseparable team who spent 16 years as the caretakers of Grenfell House, before moving on to careers within the hospital. Mary Jane was an active, hardworking woman who always had time for a bit of fun and a laugh and she was well known for speaking her mind She and Bill did not have any children of their own but were surrogate parents to their many nieces and nephews. She was passionately devoted to her work with the Grenfell Association and her family . She was a good friend to all who came to know her, enjoyed company, a cup of tea and a story or two. Her health began to fail in the last number of months and she passed peacefully away on December 15th . She is survived by two brothers, Job (Elizabeth) and Norman (Myra), her loved nieces and nephews as well as sisters-in law Ethel, Dora, Florence (Paul), Vera and Violet and her special niece Gail Hancock (Phil), as well as many, many close and dear friends. She was predeceased by her husband Bill, parents Esau and Dorcas, sisters Blanche and Lucinda and brothers Ralph, Jeremiah and Clifford. She will be sadly missed.
