HUGHES, CALVIN
August 3, 1947 - February 24, 2023
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Calvin Hughes on February 24th, 2023 after a short battle with cancer at James Patton Memorial Hospital in Gander surrounded by his loving family.
Calvin was born to Henry and Isabella Hughes in Green Island Brook on August 3, 1947. He married the love of his life, Donna Applin on December 28, 1971. He was a devoted dad to 4 children; Sherman, Rocky, Tammy, and Eliza whom he loved deeply to the very end.
Calvin lived in Green Island Brook until 1996 when he moved to Goose Bay where he met some of the most special friends and coworkers that he deeply cared for. It is while he was in Goose Bay that the pride and joy of his life, Shikara was born. Shikara was certainly “Pop’s girl” who could do no wrong. Right to the very end she held her pops hand.
Left to mourn with loving memories, his wife of 51 years, Donna; Children: Sherman (Kaye), Rocky (Kim), Tammy (Scott), Eliza (Shane), and Shikara (Kyle); Grandchildren: Jamie Leigh, Julia, Irelyn, Jadea, Tucker, Paul, Jack, Jayden, and Chloe; Siblings: Nathanial, Viola (Albert), Wilfred (Elaine), Wilga (Amy), Ronald (Millie), Millie (Chesley), Eileen (Donald), Lorraine (Selby), Harvey (Julie), Vina (Jimmy), and Maisie (Lloyd). He will be greatly missed by a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends
Calvin is predeceased by his Parents, Henry and Isabella Hughes; Sister, Rosie Parrill; Special brother-in-law, Ronald Campbell; in-laws, William (Bill) and Eliza Applin.

HUGHES, NICHOLAS
June 4, 1945 - Dec 12, 2021
Passed away December 12, 2021 at Charles S. Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony at the age of 76 years. He leaves to mourn his Daughter/Niece, Nancy (Hank); Granddaughters, Chloe & Sara; Brothers, Hughie (Marie), Fred (Melvina), Barry (Ruby); Sisters, Olive (late David Noseworthy), Thamsie (Wallace), Maggie (Edmund), Patsy (Windsor), Susie (Scott); Sister in Laws, Hazel (late Walter Williams) Dulcie (late William Applin) Beulah (Bruce)0, Shirley; Brother in Laws, Stewart(Juanita) Wallace(Thamsie) Wilson (Violet) and a large circle of nieces, nephews and extended family & friends.
He is predeceased by his Wife, Marjorie; parents, Uriah and Mary Elizabeth Hughes; In laws, Albert & Laura Parrill; Brother, Christopher; Sisters, Virtue (George) Parrill, Nancy, Velma, Dorothy & Olga.
The magnitude of love is not restricted by parameters or definitions. Nicholas adored Nancy, technically his niece, but forever his daughter. He provided her with so much comfort and care her entire life and she was happy to return the same. His pride only grew as his family expanded with his son in law, Hank and then the blessings of his little girls, granddaughters Chloe and Sara. How he adored them all, wanted the best for them, strived to give them all he could, especially his affection. His family was indeed his treasure.
Nicholas will be greatly missed by all who have known him. There’s hardly a house on this coast that hasn’t been touched by Nicholas's carpentry skills, from building houses, installing kitchen cupboards and building front decks, there was nothing he didn’t try to accomplish.
Since his wife’s passing in January there has been quite a few good family and friends to tended to him on a daily basis especially his brother Hughie who was his right hand man, he couldn’t do anything without him and vice versa, Hughies Wife Marie always made sure to keep his belly full each and every day. No words can express how much they meant to Nicks and the family is very thankful for their selfless acts of kindness daily.
We would also like to send a special thanks to “his Nurse” Cindy Coombs-Williams who went above and beyond to make him as comfortable as possible during his illness. He thought the world of her and she cared for him dearly.
Visitation to take place on Sunday December 19, 2021 at St. Andrews Anglican Church, Lower Cove from 6-10 pm. The funeral will take place on Dec 20th, 2021 at 11am pm with Rev. Deacon Vernon Short officiating. The service will be followed by burial at the Green Island Brook cemetery.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Kerry M Fillatre Funeral Home, St. Anthony and Roddickton, Lee Nippard, Funeral Director.
