BURDEN, ROBERT CARL

January 23, 1954 – May 10, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Robert Carl Burden, who passed away peacefully on May 10, 2025, at the age of 71.

Robert was Born in St. Lunaire-Griquet, Newfoundland, on January 23, 1954, to Gordon and Evelyn Burden. Robert lived a life rooted in love, hard work, and connection to his community. A dedicated fisherman, Robert spent much of his life on the sea, embracing a career that reflected both his strength and deep bond with the land and waters of Newfoundland. His presence was quiet but steady, his kindness genuine, and his love for his family beyond measure.

Robert is survived by his loving daughters: Samantha (Corey), Amanda (Thomas), and Jennalee (Andre), and his cherished grandchildren: Andrea, Tristen, Alyssa, Allie, Stephanie, Andre Jr., and Mariyah, along with his great-grandson Xavier. He also leaves behind his brothers: Elias (Joyce), Clem (Irene), Gilbert (Ethel), Hedley (Audrey), Ralph, Ted (Mary), and Gregory; and sisters: Betty (Martin), Mary (Valance), and Audrey (Samuel). Robert had a special bond with his niece Denecka, and will be fondly remembered by a large circle of nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is predeceased by Son: Gilbert Best; Mother: Evelyn; Father: Gorden; Brother: Melvin; Grandparents: Clem and Violet Hillier; Joseph and Jane Burden; and Nephew: Danny.

Robert found joy in the simple pleasures of life—traveling between St. John's and St. Lunaire to visit family, walking through the cove to visit loved ones, berry picking, stopping by Burden's Store, and tinkering around the shed with anything he could find to pass the time.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the many hospital staff at the Health Sciences Centre, especially the dedicated ICU nurses, for their compassion and care during Robert’s final days.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will take place from the Salvation Army Citadel in St. Anthony on Wednesday, May 14, 2025 from 7-9 pm, Thursday May 15, 2025 from 2-4 pm with an additional viewing and family service from 7-9 pm. The funeral service will take place on Friday, May 16, 2025 at 2:00 PM with Major Stokes officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Lunaire-Griquet Salvation Army Cemetery. You can register for the funeral livestream here.

SMITH, ROBERT ROY

Robert Roy Smith, 82, of St. Anthony NL, passed away on February 16, 2025 at the Heath Sciences Center in St. John’s NL after a couple long years of medical mayhem. A strong and determined man to the end, he made his exit exactly how he wished it to be – calm, peaceful, surrounded by family and holding Bernice’s hand.

He was born to Maxwell and Olive (Pardy) Smith on March 16, 1942. He married Bernice (Simms) in 1962 and together raised four children, Dawn, Danny, Karen and Gwynn.

Roy provided for his family working as a power engineer with the Grenfell Mission power plant. For 39 years, he walked to worked swinging his lunch can, until he retired. Ever the workhorse, he then took a position with the St. Anthony Cold Storage and finally finished his career in his late 70’s. He worked hard.

He was an avid woodworker and loved spending time in his shed creating special projects for family and friends; everything from birdhouses to garbage boxes, shelves to cradles. He loved a day in the potato garden or a day berry picking with Bernice, and shamelessly bragged if the yield was good. He loved moose hunting with his friends every fall. He enjoyed baking and cooking, and as many can attest, could make boot leather taste like beef bourguignon. He took great pride in everything he did. He was meticulous.

Roy had a great sense of humour and loved to ‘torment’. He created silly names for his children and grandchildren to which we still answer today. He loved listening to music and sang along with whatever was playing; often substituting a colorful phrase or gibberish for the lyrics he didn’t know. He enjoyed a good card game and blatantly cheated to add spice to the family flinch games. He was fun.

Roy is mourned and missed by his wife, Bernice, and their four children; Dawn (Sam), Danny (Zuza), Karen (Kenneth), Gwynn (Jerry) as well as former daughter-in-law Bea. He will be forever remembered as the best Pop ever by his seven grandchildren, Aimee (Brad), Hayley (Josh), Becca (Stephen), Alison, Kelsi (Shawn), Steven (Melanie) and Sara (Riley). He was loved.

Left to mourn with a lifetime of fond memories are his twin sisters Jean Boyd (Eric) and Judy Johnston, sisters-in-law Evelyn Smith, Peggy Simms, Marie Simms and brother-in-law Roy Simms (Irene) and his many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.

He will be missed by all those he considered friends; the neighbours ‘around the hill’, the ‘by’s’ on the waterfront, the fellas at the cold storage, former colleagues, and the many with whom he enjoyed a ‘carrying on’…you know who you all are.

He was predeceased by several family members and close friends whom he deeply mourned. Most recently, his brother Larry just 3 months ago.

Those wishing to make a donation in his memory may do so to the Children’s Wish Foundation NL, The St. Anthony Boys and Girls Club or White Hills Academy Breakfast Program.

The family would like to thank: the staff at CCMH St. Anthony for your care and support throughout his many visits in the last two years. He spoke very fondly of everyone he met and knew. His favorite Public Health nurses, he looked forward to your visits and conversations. The staff at the HSC St. John’s for their tireless efforts to help him, he wanted to live.

A celebration of life will take place on Monday, April 21, 2025 from the St. Anthony United Church at 2:00 PM with Rev. Arthur Kinsella officiating. Interment to follow.

COLBOURNE, ROBERT GORDON

April 25, 1967 – May 28, 2019

Robert Gordon Colbourne was born April 25, 1967 to Eliza and Winston Colbourne. He was the youngest of three children, with one brother, Whyman and a sister Irene, who gave him the only niece on his side of the family, Christa. At 17 years old he fell in love with Diane Earle. Their only daughter Jillian was born May 29, 1989. Then he married the love of his life on August 2, 1991. Rob and Diane have been each other's best friend since then. He loved spending his spare time at the cabin, fishing and snowmobiling. He enjoyed having a coffee and chats with his family and friends. He was devoted to Diane, and spoiled his daughter Jillian and his grandsons Liam and Jack who were precious to him and "Pop's tag alongs". He always had time for them and couldn't wait to get back from sea to be with them. He was looking forward to the new Grandson as well! He welcomed Andrew his son in law into the family and treated him like his own son. Several years ago Rob got to know God on a personal level and it was evident to everyone the positive change it made in his life. Rob worked hard to provide for his family, unselfishly spending long periods of time at sea. He started fishing with his father when he was a teenager in L’anse Aux Meadows. After he was married, he went to Ontario for three summers Sandblasting and Painting. He then started fishing in many boats on the southern shore. He also fished with some of his uncles on the Calm Sea for 7 years. After that, he fished as a Second Trawl Boss on the Acadienne Gale II for 16 years. Finally, he fished on the Newfoundland Victor for the past year and a half. What kept him going was knowing he had a family at home who loved him and was waiting for him. We bid Rob farewell on this his final voyage and until we meet again May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Robert Leaves to Mourn his Wife, Diane Colbourne; Daughter Jilian (Andrew) Baker; Grandchildren Liam & Jack Baker; Parents Eliza & Winston Colbourne; Grandparents Delilah & Selby Tucker; Sister Irene Simms (Clifford); Niece Christa Simms as well as a large number of other relatives and friends. Visitation was held from the Pentecostal Tabernacle in St. Lunaire-Griquet from where the funeral was held on Monday, June 3, 2019 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Harnum officiating. A bit about Bob-
How do we begin to describe such and incredible man? he was a loving father, a big brother, a great uncle, a loyal friend, a dedicated worker and a special poppy. most importantly, he was a wonderful and loving husband-- who still couldn't  resist every opportunity to tease Carol, especially about her beloved Maple Leafs. he was an all-around outdoors man- a fur trapper, a moose hunter, a fisherman. a sawmill operator, a tractor trailer driver, a heavy equipment operator, a woodsman. a split maker, a superb scoff cooker. an expert berry picker, a master story teller. and an overall hard worker whose work ethic was comparable to none.
he was a man that words do not do justice to. you only had to meet him once to never forget him with his beautiful. kind. generous. smiling blue eyes. and you can be sure. he never forgot you! he had the most generous heart. he could be sitting down to eat his supper and someone would call for help and he would get up form his own supper to help out. he lived and loved to help other- weather family . friend or stranger. st. Anthony was his home in the truest sense. he only left when he had to and longed to get back as soon as he had left. we can remember when we would go on family vacations. he enjoyed visiting people and places, but if he had a choice he would rather they came to see him. his wife and daughters can tell you that many a vacation was because they wanted to go somewhere, but many times we would come home early with "no stops on the way." Bob/Dad was such a big part of the community of st. Anthony that many people will miss his stories and his blue truck driving up and down the road-- driving slowly of course! one small testament to how much he was respected in his home town is that the town of st. Anthony has decided to postpone water main repairs until after his funeral on Thursday.
he was such a social person and truly enjoyed the many social gatherings in his brother Eric's store. he will by sadly missed  by young and old alike
Rest in peace, Bob/ Dad, We all love you.
